From the Sheepcote: A Heart of Humility Like David

In the quiet of the early morning, with my Bible open and the day just beginning, I’ve been slowly reading through Scripture from cover to cover. When I came to 1 Chronicles 17, verse 7 caught my attention, but it was David’s humble response in verses 16–20 that truly settled deep into my heart. There was something so tender and reverent in his words that I couldn’t just pass by it.

As I sat there reading, I found myself lingering on those verses, thinking on them long after I had closed my Bible. It stirred something in me that I couldn’t ignore. So I wanted to sit down and share what was on my heart as I read this, it was truly quite amazing how the Lord used such a simple moment in His Word to speak so deeply.

Before I go any further, I want to be clear in my heart and intention. What I’m sharing here is not meant to teach, preach, or step outside of the role that Scripture has given me as a woman.

The Word of God is clear about order. In 1 Timothy 2:12 (KJV), it says, “But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.” I desire to honor that, along with the pattern we see throughout Scripture—that men are called to lead, preach and teach within the church.

At the same time, God has given women a beautiful and purposeful role. In Titus 2:3–5 (KJV), we are called to be “teachers of good things,” guiding in godliness through our lives, our homes, and our example, living out faith in a way that reflects Christ.

So this is simply that, a sharing of what the Lord has been working in my own heart during my personal time in His Word. My prayer is that it never draws attention to me, but instead points you back to Scripture and encourages you to seek the Lord for yourself.

There is something deeply moving about the way God calls His people, not from places of prestige, but from places of obscurity. The quiet fields. The hidden seasons. The humble beginnings.

In 1 Chronicles 17:7 (KJV), the Lord reminds David:

“I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel.”

David’s story did not begin in a palace. It began in a pasture.

He was a shepherd, overlooked, ordinary, and faithful in the unseen places. Yet God saw him. God chose him. And God raised him up.

Called From the Sheepcote

The sheepcote represents more than just a physical place, it symbolizes the seasons in our lives where we feel hidden, unnoticed, or unimportant.

David wasn’t striving for a crown when God called him. He was tending sheep.

And isn’t that often how God works?

He shapes us in the quiet places before He ever calls us into something greater. The discipline, the faithfulness, and the trust we build in those hidden seasons are preparing us for what’s ahead.

David’s Response: A Heart of Humility

When David reflects on all that God has done for him, his response is not pride, it’s humility.

In 1 Chronicles 17:16-17 (KJV), David says:

“Who am I, O Lord God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come…”

David recognized something powerful:

He didn’t earn this. He didn’t deserve this. It was all God’s grace.

He continues in verses 18-20, acknowledging that there is none like the Lord, and no God beside Him.

This is the posture of a heart that truly understands God’s goodness.

Who Am I, O Lord?

That question David asked still echoes today:

“Who am I?”

It’s not a question of insecurity, it’s a question of awe.

It’s the realization that a holy, sovereign God would see us, choose us, and use us anyway.

In a world that constantly pushes self-promotion, David models something radically different:

  • Humility instead of pride
  • Gratitude instead of entitlement
  • Worship instead of self-glory

From Shepherd to King… But Still a Servant

Even after being established as king, David never forgot where he came from.

He remembered the sheepcote.

And more importantly, he remembered the God who brought him out of it.

That’s what kept his heart tender.

That’s what kept him grounded.

A Lesson for Us Today

We all have our own “sheepcote” seasons.

Maybe you’re in one right now:

  • Raising children in the quiet of your home
  • Working faithfully without recognition
  • Serving others in ways no one else sees

It can feel small. It can feel unnoticed.

But God sees. ♡

And just like David, He is working on you, shaping your heart.

Stay Faithful in the Field♡

David didn’t become a man after God’s own heart overnight.

It was cultivated in the field.

In the quiet.
In the ordinary.
In the daily obedience.

So if you find yourself in a humble place today, take heart & thank God for it:

God still calls from the sheepcote.

And when He does, may our response be the same as David’s:

“Who am I, O Lord God?” ♡

A heart that remembers where it came from…
A heart that gives God all the glory…
A heart that stays humble, no matter how high God lifts it.
